Addendum 3416F-I
Stock supply Naloxone (opioid antagonist) Information to parent/guardians of students, grade K-12 in Butte School District # 1
“Opioid antagonist” means a drug that binds to opioid receptors and blocks or inhibits the effect of opioids acting on those receptors, including but not limited to naloxone hydrochloride, or any other similarly acting drug approved by the United States food and drug administration.
In accordance with Montana House Bill No. 323 and recognizing the rise in opioid abuse across the U.S., Butte School District #1 developed a policy and procedural guidelines to maintain a stock supply of an opioid antagonist (naloxone) in student occupied buildings attended by 7th-12th graders in January 2018. This medication may be delivered intranasally by the school nurse or other trained personnel to any student or nonstudent as needed for an actual or perceived opioid overdose in the school setting or at related activities. Recognizing opioid abuse and misuse is increasing worldwide and locally. We are extending our stock supply to all K-12 students occupied buildings within the District.
District employees will be identified and trained as providers of this potentially life-saving medication. A 9 1 1 call will be placed when this medication is administered. Those administering this medication will be trained in recognizing the signs and symptoms of opioid overdose, indications for administering the antagonist, administration techniques and the need for immediate access to a certified emergency responder. Training may be provided by a school nurse, certified emergency responder, or other health care professional.
In accordance with the provisions of 27-1-714, a school district and its employees and agents are not liable as a result of any injury arising from the administration of an opioid antagonist to a student or nonstudent unless an act or omission is the result of gross negligence, willful or wanton misconduct, or an intentional tort.
