Crisis Intervention/Management

The intent of this policy is to develop guidelines which will establish a uniform procedure to minimize the stress and confusion inherent in a crisis situation. This policy is meant to be a flexible guideline which can be adapted to meet the needs of each, unique situation. The building principal or administrator is to return the school and each class to the normal routine as soon as possible. By addressing the emotional needs of the students and staff, problems often associated with traumatic events can be averted.

The purpose of the Crisis Intervention/Management policy, therefore, is to establish a procedure to determine the steps to be taken to handle a crisis situation. This policy applies to all schools within the District.

A culture of safety will be maintained under the direction of the school safety team. The team will include the building principal or building administrator, assistant principal (if available), school resource officer (SRO), dean(s) of students (in high school), the school psychologist(s), counselor(s) (middle and high schools), and other selected staff members. Resources within the community will be contacted on an as- needed basis. The principal, building administrator or designee will facilitate the safety team meeting.

The functions of the safety team will be to:

  1. Develop a safe-school action plan.
  2. Assist in post-incident response, such as a school-site crisis team.
  3. Assist in crisis-prevention and threat-assessment action plans.
  4. Assist in crisis-recovery and disaster-recovery logistics.
  5. Assist community-based crisis teams responding to a critical incident.
