Butte School District

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

3102

Attendance Area Policy

The Trustees shall establish school attendance areas. Pupils are assigned a school attendance area based upon their residence. Student transfers shall not be made from the attendance area of residency to another school without permission of the sending and receiving principals and the Superintendent. The Superintendent shall have authority to secure a more equitable distribution of pupils and to avoid the overcrowding of schools (i.e., exceeding accreditation standards and/or classroom size limitations).

These considerations shall be taken into account when evaluating transfer requests in the following order:

  1. The classroom to be attended is not overcrowded based upon accreditation standards and classroom size limitations.
  2. Appropriate educational programs or services (i.e., special education, etc.) are available in the school in which the student desires enrollment.
  3. Students residing within an attendance area shall be given preference over nonresident students.
  4. Efforts shall be made to keep siblings in the same elementary school.
  5. If a boundary adjustment occurs, former in-boundary student(s) affected may remain in the school that they had attended.
  6. Health and safety of students in transportation and walking are of paramount importance.
  7. Child care.
  8. Transfers for disciplinary purposes may be made to schools where space is available after consultation with the building principals involved.
  9. Other reasonable requests will be considered by the Superintendent.

Should a student move from one attendance area to another during the school year, the student may, with the approval of the Superintendent, complete the current academic year in the original school.

Enrollment information may be obtained by contacting the Superintendent’s Office. Any student(s) required to enroll outside their attendance area will be informed of conditions that may exist for the following school year.

All transfer requests must be renewed by the parent/guardian by June 1st of each school year. The Superintendent will begin to review and approve requests following registration.

Current proof of residency will be required of all student(s).

District transportation will be provided when the student(s) is required by the District to go to another school outside of the student’s attendance area for that year only. The parent/guardian shall provide transportation for approved voluntary requests.
