Student Report Cards

Definitions:

“Report card” - A formal communication sent home every (6) weeks, which reports information relative to the student’s academic progress, effort, days absent, social development, and attitude toward school.

“Parent Portal” - A web-based program that allows parents to view in “real time” the academic progress and attendance of their child/children enrolled in the Butte School District.

“Electronic Gradebook” - The district’s standard electronic gradebook application, used to calculate and report student grades, which is part of an integrated system that allows parents “real-time” access to their child/children’s academic progress and attendance.

Grading and Reporting Procedures:

The District believes that cooperation between school and home is vital to the education of all students and recognizes its responsibility to keep parents/guardians informed of student welfare and progress in school.  The regular issuance of report cards is the basis for continual evaluation of the student’s performance and for determining changes to effect improvement.

Semester grades are calculated on a cumulative basis.  Grading periods 1, 2, and 3 determine semester 1.  Grading periods 4, 5, and 6 determine semester 2.  Semester grades are NOT calculated by averaging the final grade for each grading period.

The District directs administrators to maintain uniform reporting of student grades and requires all staff members to comply with such system as part of their teaching responsibility, including maintaining an accurate and updated electronic gradebook, for purposes of reporting academic progress to parents via the District’s Parent Portal System.

Grading

The teacher may use plus (+) and minus (-) grade indicators to convey a more exact placement of individual student. A plus (+) grade indicator may be given if the student’s academic average is equal to one (1) of the two (2) highest scores within a grade range (i.e. 78 or 79 will be assigned a C+). A minus (-) grade indicator may be given if the student’s academic average is equal to one (1) or the two (2) lowest scores within a grade range (i.e. 70 or 71 will be assigned a C-). Plus (+) and minus (-) grade indicators will not be reflected in semester grades.

Grades K-12:

Report cards will be sent home to the parent/guardian every six (6) weeks.  Kindergarten students will not receive a report card for grading period 1 as progress will be discussed at parent-teacher conferences.  Teachers are encouraged to contact the parent/guardian with additional comments.  Parent/guardian-teacher conferences for grades K through 8 will be held at least once a year.  A teacher or parent/guardian may request another conference at any time.

In an effort to keep lines of communication open between parent/guardian and teachers, conferences at the high school a will be held twice a year .  Parent-teacher meetings can be arranged anytime during the school year.    Student academic progress will be available to parents anytime during the school year, by viewing the Parent Portal system.    The basic academic achievement will be reported by a letter grade as follows:

A = Superior or 90% - 100%
B = Very good or 80% - 89%
C = Acceptable or 70% -79%
D = Poor or 60% -69%
F = Failure or 59% and below

Grades will reflect the characteristic achievement of the student relative to the curriculum objectives.  Grades should communicate how well the student understood and integrated the
material and whether the student is prepared to proceed to the next level of material.   A pass-fail grade may not apply to some courses in the middle school and high school (not included in the grade-point-average calculation).  (Note in grades 3 - 6 a combination of letter grades and secondary marks will be used to report student progress)
