Transportation – School Activities
Students and personnel participating in school activities will utilize vendor- supplied vehicles for travel more than one hundred (100) miles from Butte, except when District bus(es) have been specifically requested. If a vendor-supplied vehicle is not available, District buses should be utilized.
District buses will be used for all activities involving travel under one hundred (100) miles from Butte, unless extenuating circumstances dictate otherwise. This determination will be made by the director of facilities, maintenance, and transportation, based on the following criteria:
Availability of District vehicles and drivers;
District to be traveled;
Weather and road conditions;
Cost to the District.
A minimum of one (1) coach, one (1) teacher, or one (1) adult chaperone will be required for all buses traveling out of the District.
District buses will be assigned for extracurricular events, based on availability.
Student organization or group use for extracurricular events is subject to compliance with rules established for field trips and other school-oriented activities under Student Behavior Code and School Bus Handbook for Students. In order for a student to leave the bus at any time prior to returning to Butte, written permission must be presented to the coach, teacher, or adult chaperone by the parent or guardian at time of release.
School buses, vans, and any other motor vehicle used for transporting students to and from school and to and from school-sponsored activities will operate in compliance with commercial vehicle limits for the state of Montana. Maximum speed limits will be:
Interstate highway – sixty-five (65) miles per hour or posted speed, whichever is lower.
Secondary highway – fifty-five (55) miles per hour or posted speed, whichever is lower.
Conditions of the roadway, weather, and traffic flow will be factors in determining the actual operating speed of any vehicle providing transportation of students as defined by this policy.
