Private Vehicle Transportation
The Board authorizes use of private vehicles, defined as vehicles not owned by the District, under the following circumstances:
The District may tender a contract to the parent/guardian of an eligible transportee, whereby the District would pay the parent/guardian for individually transporting the student(s) to and from school. The director of facilities, maintenance, and transportation will recommend or, if necessary, submit the contract for approval by the Board and the county transportation committee.
Upon approval by the site administrator, staff may transport students, when a student’s welfare is involved, or when due care dictates prompt action.
For field or activity trips, the transportation of smaller groups of students (one (1) to fourteen (14)) may, with the principal’s budgetary approval, use a District or rental vehicle. For larger groups of students (fifteen (15) or greater), either District- or vendor-supplied vehicles may be used and, in accordance with Montana law, will be driven by drivers possessing a current Montana CDL with passenger endorsement. The choice between District- and vendor-supplied vehicles will be based on the following:
Availability of District vehicles and drivers;
Distance to be traveled (see Policy 8102);
Weather and road conditions;
Cost to the District.
All vehicle arrangements will be made by the director of facilities, maintenance, and transportation.
